Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are one of the most common but least talked about public health problems in the world. The World Health Organization's Global STD Report says that there were approximately 374 million new cases of STIs in 2020. The real global burden is much higher when you include viral agents like the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and 2) and bacterial co-infectors like Mycoplasma genitalium, Gardnerella vaginalis and Ureaplasma urealyticum/parvum.

The clinical effects are serious and wide ranging. Routine screening at least once a year for sexually active adults and more often for those with multiple partners is key to stopping the spread of STIs without anyone knowing. Notifying a partner right away when an infection is found, testing each other before starting a new relationship and not treating yourself are all practical steps that can have a real impact on the spread of disease. At the population level, public health education and the destigmatization of STI testing are the foundational elements that ensure the sustainability of individual preventive behaviours.

Culture and microscopy are two common ways to diagnose STDs but they don't always work well when it comes to sensitivity and turnaround time. A lot of infections go undetected because the pathogen load is low or the person doesn't show any symptoms. Molecular diagnostics is a game changer in this area. Molecular methods, especially real-time PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), are the most sensitive and specific as they can find genetic material that is specific to a pathogen. These methods make it possible to accurately identify infections even when the microbe load is very low.
